OK, this conversation was started long long ago between Jetmex and I and I'm getting close to laying plans to wood...I'll need to make a decision once I start the fuse (or, depending on the A/C, wing as well), so some more input would be appreciated... I'd like to do something original with a GP P-51D kit I plan to build soon, and since I also have a P-51B canopy, my options have widened quite a bit. A number of different A/C had been suggested in the past, including the Yak-7, Lavochkin LaGG-3, Macchi C.205V, and others of the relatively same configuration. I particularly like the LaGG-3, but it entails some wing reconfiguration. I think that the Yak would be easiest and it rolls off the tongue nicely (MUS-yak). No, this won't be built for scale accuracy, obviously, but I would like to bash 'er into a recognizeable alteration, just to be different. ...I also (obviously) have the option to go with the P-51A, B or C versions, not to mention blowing off the bashing party and just build as per the P-51D plan... So are the scratch builders out there? I'd like to know that I'd have the love and support of some like-minded fellows once I ruin the first block of balsa... Any input is appreciated and I'll keep y'all updated as to progress once the debacle begins...

What about a Kawasaki Ki 61 Hien?

After looking over the 3 views for both the Yak and the Lagg, either one is going to be a job to create from a mustang kit.
Just looking at the lines, the P 40 is probably a better base to start from. The trouble with the Yak is the wing, it has that highly tapered but wide at the root wing. The mustang with its root sweep would probably be close, but then you have to fabricate the wing from there. The fuse is fairly thick all the way back to the tail on the Lagg & Yak both, while the 'stang tapers down fairly small.
The Mig 3 actually has a closer profile than the other 2, but the wing is still the standard Russian taper thing.

Hey Stetto, I like the idea of the Ki-61. Round off the wingtips, use the B canopy with the aft windows removed, shave the belly scoop and tweak the tailfeathers a little. I've got all kinds of three-views and info on the Hein at home, email me if you'd like me to scan them for ya... But then again..a MUSYAK!!! It even sounds cool!

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, the Ki-61 does have the same sexy lines, don't she though....
...And meatballs would be easier than Red Stars...Ya, I'd like to see the three views, as all I have on the Hien is the pic in Stewart Wilson's Aircraft of WWII.
Not too much modification, the tail is darn close to the same, wingtips rounder, all good, but would I call it a MUSki or HIENtang? Doesn't have that same "yakky" appeal, ya know???
Yeah, Jaime, I'd love to see the thre-views...

Slope o' the nose is the only real challenge I see with the Hien. Eric, there's more than just the spinner to ward me off the Fiat (and the Macchis for that matter), one of which would be paint scheme...I don't have a green plane yet, another argument for the Hien...

...It dawns on me today that I'm not experienced enough to try to bash that poor little '51 using just three-views...There's a gent down in West Phoenix who told me he had some plans that were the same size of a 51B, maybe I should stay the course and make my next 51 into a MusYaccikinHeinEtc...I'd really rather have something flyable when I'm done...

You didn't say it had to be flyable...... ;D
Actually the B/C conversion wouldn't be too hard, just build up the turtledeck aft of the cockpit to match the canopy you have. Don't forget to compensate for the extra weight that will add. If you need help, call me, I'll come on up. I can bash all kinds of things. You'll have to take me to Belle Fourche, though.....

Watch what I wish for Jaime, it might just come true--Taking you to Belle Fourche is way too easy a condition... ...You'd like my back yard, and would kick yourself if you didn't bring something to fly...

...So one of the items being offered at half-price at the LHS I mentioned was going out of bidnez in the Flying Circus forum is the TopFlyte 1/7 scale P-51 conversion kit. I can have it for 18 bucks, but I know it likely will be way too big for the GP kit. The TF has a 65" span and the GP is 57...Any thoughts?
