Wow that thing landed hard. Looks like it might have hit something overhead like a cable or something and it took out one engine. I noticed it hit the ground with one engine toward the ground, suggesting that one wasn't working making it a three-engine anvil. Bet the guy flying it was crapping square bricks as he saw the skier come over that hill.

That was not one you walk in and buy from the hobby shop either, I bet that was a network camera platform. Good thing he was racing the clock, or would have met it.

Story here gives a little more detail. Looking at the picture shown there, as the drone is about to hit it looks like one engine is dangling by the camera mount brackets and is way out of position relative to drone centerline. I'm thinking he must have had a collision with something or else the bolts weren't tightened and it fell apart. The incident caused the contest director to ban drones at these events. The article said the pilot was supposed to maintain a 50ft buffer between the drone and the skier it was following but seems like he was not observing it. Like Eastwood says, a man's GOT to know his limitations.

Seriously, WTH did that guy think was going to happen in NannyStateCentral? He's lucky they didn't charge him with liberal terrorism and aerial photography without written approval by the city. On the bright side, some security guard has a new drone and will be buying a new transmitter on E-Bay.

Well I'm glad the registration stopped this kind of thing from happening.

We need more and better common sense skyscraper controls.

These kind of things don't happen in other developed nations, I'm tired of having to say I'm sorry for what we do with our buildings and we need some common sense control used on them.

Here's an idea: Maybe we should enact a law that says if your drone is stuck on private property you must turn over the drone and transmitter to the property owner or face jail/fines. Maybe then people would think twice about trying to fly their $800 toy around buildings or other places it shouldn't be.
We also need better shotgun loads, smaller charges and rubber pellets, and the right to defend property against intrusions from flying weed whackers.
