One of the things in the farm bill among the many that have nothing to do with farming is the expansion of broadband into rural areas, so thanks tax payers you will be funding the "improvement to quality of life for rural areas".
Actually you probably won't be paying for me since there is a private internet provider who serves us more or less so I imagine there will not be a new one.
That is a apparently to let us surf porn and keep from stomping down to the FSA and beating someone to death. By cutting the old 2 programs out that were full of waste and fraud, and implementing at least 4 new programs that include much more compliance issues and paper work to do as well as being so convoluted as to make the amount of money gained from these programs not worth while to the small family farms. Formerly there were no programs for forage crops, which is fine, now there is and they all include mandatory risk management i.e forced insurance, even if your insurance costs more than any benefit, and the payout for forage damage is notoriously low to nil. And if I understood it right, you have to enroll all crops on your operation if you do any. SO say you want to get in on the crop insurance for corn or wheat, if you raise hay, you enroll that as well with all associated compliance costs AND required conservation plans, which in some areas dictate the method of irrigation to comply with that.
I was told by a pretty good sized farmer, someone farming about 750 acres plus of irrigated row crops that these were well worth it to get into. I am not going to bother, we both stood there and said we wished govt would get out of our business, and am thinking I am done inviting them into it, while he was eager to sign up for anything as long as there is a payout at the end of the rainbow.
Really I can't think of anything the govt does that really makes a difference when it comes to operating, if you are going broke the stop gap programs are poor joke, if you don't need the money they seem to shovel it to you at the volumes that politcal BS is, and of course the program farmers who farm for insurance payouts are happier than ever.
But hey they fixed the farm bill, we should all be happy right.
