So I am a freshman in college and my ultimate goal is to make it as a commercial pilot. I was planning to attend Embry Riddle this semester but decided to defer a year to save money and acquire my pilots certificate locally around me where its cheaper. My question is whether it would be worth the extra forty or so on every lesson to fly a 172 over a 142? Keeping in mind where I want to go, would flying a 142 hurt me overall financially and/or skill wise?

We are more a model aviation forum that full scale, so take it for whats it worth.
I would think it really is not that much different as they are just teaching basic flight skills, and you could always probably move up to some time in a 172 if you felt you needed it later.

;D Just my two cents, I started in a J-3 Cub & went onto a Cessna 180 & onto a Cardinal RT-177 & I had some DC-3 time that was fun & very expensive. The ARMY DRAFT got me & later I marriad & kids a house & debt. & no was longer flying real planes. I fly model planes now. Go for the largest plane that you can afford & keep moving up to turbo props, to improve your resume. Good luck in your future endeavors. When you have time, fly model planes ;D
