If a chicken and a half lays an egg and a half in a day and a half, how many eggs can farmer Tyson Jones expect from his 20 chickens in a 30 day month?
Marylin vosSavent got this one wrong. She depended on the trick you learn in physics of being sure the units in your answer are correct. If you want miles/gallon and get an answer in miles/hour, you made a mistake. However, your answer in miles/gallon may still be wrong.
This is an old problem and you can find it discussed a number of times on the internet.

First there is no such thing as a 1/2 chicken or egg. Therefore 3 chickens lay 3 eggs in 1.5 days. Those 3 chickens can therfore lay 60 eggs in 30 days as there are 20 - 36 hour periods per month. Therefore 18 chickens lay 360 eggs in 30 days.
The other two chickens are for frying!!!

;D Marylin vosSavant made a remark about scrambled eggs. That's the way I solved the problem the first time through. I suppose a quantum physicist would have no problem thinking about half chickens. Now I recognize that the number of chickens is equal to the number of eggs for any time period, so 20 chickens lay 20 eggs in 11/2 days. and 30 days is 20 11/2 days so 400 eggs. Farmer Tyson Jones does not care to eat chicken. When we raised fryers, we would kill one or two at a time, but we wouldn't have chicken the same day. Chickens have a smell when being cleaned which kills my appetite for chicken for a while.
