About 3 weeks ago I was purchasing paint for my Dolphin. I asked the store owner/sales person, if Lustor coat spray paint and Ultra coat spray paint were compatable. He didn't know for sure, so I gave it a try. Well, it does't work. I used the Ultra coat as a base for the main color, which was the Luster coat and it aligatored. Lucky for me it was just it a few places. I assume both are good products but don't mix them. By the way, the Luster coat seemed to take double the amount of the Ultra coat to cover the same area.

I think Luster coat is an Lacquer type and Ultracote is an enamel or as close as spray cans get. Lacquer will raise enamels. Lacquer also sprays thinner and dries faster than enamels which is why it tends to take more to cover and can turn out rough looking.

You are probably right about the paint. The Ultra was supposed to be fuel proof. Is that correct with enamal? I am simply going back to my Dupont choma systems or just using some of the regular spray can paints (krylon-rustoleum) and top coat with Chroma clear. For that matter, water colors can be used if covering with Chroma clear. Hmmm

I quit using kLustreCote a long, long time ago. Until they refine their formula and become consistant with the delivery system (every other can emits junk and clogs up) I won't even consider it.
Limitation of color choices notwithstanding, as far as rattlecan paint systems go I like RustOleum. I wish they'd get with the times spray-tip wise, as there are some nice fan producing spray-can nozzles out there, but for consistancy of material, color and quality out of the can I haven't found a better brand for the price.

I've got to agree with stetto on the Rustoleum. It's generally fuel proof (possibly the clear and bright metal (chrome) are a little iffy).
One thing I've found is that you can apply Monokote/ultraKote over Rustoleum and get a pretty good bond with it. Just be aware that too much heat can melt the paint more than you need. It's pretty cool when you show up at the field with areas such as the cowling that normally aren't covered to match the main colorscheme, covered with Monokote or something else and everybody wonders how you matched the paint! Have been using Krylon brand FUSION and Dupli-Color hi fill grey primer with PPG auto 2 part clear final finish for several years...Have been more than safisfied with the FUSION as it grips and holds well to monokote...However, do not use the new Krylon spray paint with the conical top/lid...it will not tolerate recoating and alligators or orange peels really bad. The TF Lusterkote paints are nice but do not cover well due to not being opaque enough. The Dupli Color green chromate primer is an excellent match to old time Army Olive Green. Just make sure all paint is covered and sealed with automotive 2 part urethane clear...if spraying make darn sure you use a good breathing mask, not one of those hospital type surgical masks.
