While the wait for a new flying field to becomes available I am going to try and fly some small planes in the back yard.Since it has been many years [45] that i fooled around with 1/2 a's I am really a newbie at them.I have a couple planes in the works and was wondering which is the best way to go ,Norvel or TD.How do you compare the two to each other of the same displacement? Thanks for any help. Tom

Norvel Bigmig .049 is a great little engine, well-behaved as 1/2A's go, though a little hard to break in. Much stronger than the TD Babe Bee, perhaps a little stronger than the Black Widow, weaker than the high-performance TeeDee. If you want a honker, go with the Norvel .061--it's a bomb, easily double the power of their .049. All this just MHO, of course... --Ray P.S. I hope your yard is large--1/2A's today require longer lines than those of yesteryear--at least 35', and 42' is better for the stronger ones. Gone are the days of makeshift 15' lines in the front yard. Maybe with an .020.

Minnesota Modeler has some neat kits for sale, check out his website: www.freewebs.com/minnesotamodeler/I have purchased one Minnie Delta kit from Ray (M.M) and found the directions easy to understand and well laid out. The kit wood is very good, and his included accessory package is excellent, well packaged and quickly shipped. Overall an excellent deal. Oh yeah, I forgot, the Norvel is also another excellent value, I have four Norvel engines and am happy with them, just follow the break in directions and use good fuel. I have not experienced any problems, If needed, Sig Manufacturing is the authorized repair/exchange broker. Paul Heimgaertner

Norvel wins hands down. The BigMig .061 costs half as much, is a lot stronger, and you don't have that ball joint to worry about.
I've never owned a BigMig .049, the .061 is the same price. The AME .049 is a LOT more powerful than any Tee Dee I've ever had.

I have so many TD's that I'll probably never own a Norvel. If that were not the case, I would definately go Norvel.

True, then again, you'll have to be pounding on those ball-and-socket joints till something else breaks.. ;D
Good news is that the Norvel heads/plugs will fit Tee Dees, so you don't need to buy the expensive 1702 heads any more. Or even better, use a Galbreath head and Nelson plug.
