I found that they were going to attempt to break the sound barrier with a r/c jet. This is on the airshow part of the webpage. Wow.... 760 mph roughly with an r/c jet? Anybody know if its possible or heard of it attempted before? Here's a link. www.franktiano.com/tgshow.htm

Maybe its 1/4 scale sound?

It would be interesting to see if that is possible. I think the speed record for an RC model is around 275mph, held by a slope glider of all things. It's called dynamic soaring. I've seen video of this--the airplane is a blur and I can imagine you have to have pretty good reflexes to keep up with it at those speeds. The airplanes are all reinforced carbon fiber and are built pretty solidly to take the stress that's put on them.
I'd also like to see if they fly their jet from the ground or from an airplane in flight.....

I'd also like to see if they fly their jet from the ground or from an airplane in flight..... Good Point! If the AC is going that fast, ... you would have to be in a chase plane to control it, otherwise it would pass the pilot station "Very Quickly" and be virtually uncontrolable. (you do the math as to how long it would take to pass the Pilot Station - .5 - 1 Seconds ) Hmmm . . .

Sounds like some wishfull thinking or advertising "Creative Liscense". Jets faster than a speeding bullet? To keep up with a near sonic or transonic RC model, the pilot would have to be in a plane nearly at the same speed. The aerodynamic loads on the control surfaces, servos, and airframe would be tremendous.

Seems to me that you could not take an RC airplane past mach 1 and stay there very long, you'd have a flight profile that would take it through a fixed course. You'd dive into the speed course, pass mach 1 and then pull up into a climb to bleed off the speed quickly.
If I were going to try it (as if I even had the reflexes to fly a jet any more, or ever did for that matter) I'd be thinking about an autopilot and gyros and a computer controlled flight path.
The pilot holding the tx would basically just be there to get the plane off the ground, to initiate the automatic flight path, and to hit the self destruct button when it all went haywire.

By the way, some of the model rocket guys have been going trans-sonic for a few years now, so we do have materials and methods that can handle the stresses at our small scale.

"I found that they were going to attempt to break the sound barrier with a r/c jet." ------------------------------------------------------------- Yep, they did it and actually, there's a picture of the model that they used at this page... www.franktiano.com/TopGun/tgshowmain.htmIt was a scale model of the Bell X-1 and it was dropped from a 4 engine propped plane... Aside from that, all I can tell you is that it was rocket powered and piloted by a Capt. Sal Llamie (sp)

" it was rocket powered and piloted by a Capt. Sal Llamie (sp)" --------------------------------------------------------------- I don't know if that's an Arbic name or not,, perhaps somebody around here knows him

I'm not insinuating that he's a Navy Pilot btw although it's not unlikely

"The Half Time Air Show presented on Saturday and Sunday will include some of the finest, most unusual “acts” you may ever see. "
-------------------------------------------------------------------
It really is an excellent show... I would think that for the average spectator that the half time airshow is the main event and it starts at noon I believe... Both days
