Yikes, I've gotten really sensitive to CA all of a sudden.
Yesterday after lunch I pulled out the Cub that I have been slowly building for more than 3 years now.
I glued in two small strips of balsa and one layer of sheeting on the center section of the wing, mostly using Elmer's glue. I had one seam that was being difficult and was not amenable to pinning, clamping or taping, so I decided to break out the CA to secure it.
I used maybe four big drops of CA and within a half an hour my throat was burning and my nose was stuffed up. I took a hot steamy shower and pretty well was cleared up by dinner, but wow.
Oh, by the way, I've been using plain old Elmer's glue on most things for the past five years, including wing center section joints and firewalls and have not seen any problems.
I've been using a technique I picked up from the model rocket guys called "double glue technique" Basically, you lightly coat both surfaces with a coat of Elmer's glue and let it almost dry, one or two minutes maybe. Then you recoat everything again with Elmer's and push the surfaces together. The bond is not instant, but for things like ribs or stick built fuselages, the assembly holds itself together with a minimum of clamping, pinning or taping.

...been using plain old Elmer's glue on most things for the past five years, including wing center section joints and firewalls... Caution, NOT for laminating or for any area prone to warping or where there is not a lot of air exposure so that the glue can cure out in a reasonable time. I use Elmer's to mount firewalls where there is already a good mechanical bond between the firewall and the fuselage sides. I stick with epoxy for areas where there is high stress such as gear mount blocks, mostly out of paranoia I suspect. Also I still fuel proof all exposed balsa and the tank compartment with epoxy because I am not convinced that Elmers is fuel proof.

CT: You might want to try the "odorless" CA... We used CA in the Air Force on certain weapons systems, so I had a head dtart on building up that sensitivity. It hits me like a bad case of the flu (which I haven't had since I quit taking those darn shots!). Several people told me to try oderless, so I finally broke down and found that it really does work!
I still prefer Elmers or one of the "Gorilla Glue" types for most of my building - waiting for the glue to set gives me a chance to get a little sim time in. At any rate, the odorless works for me, so I use it - Sparingly, since its cost is about double the regular - give it a try for those "GOTTA SET UP FAST! times. JohnC

Two years ago I was building a Predator (combat wing). The spar was a 6' composite of a lexan strip and two fiberglass rods bound with a strong thread, then the whole caboodle CA'd together. Took me the best part of a half hour to load this sucker up with CA. In hindsight the problem was I did not provide "adequate ventilation". A few days after that I got so congested it was unbelievable! Could not breathe through my nose, developed a cough that kept me awake most nights and felt thoroughly miserable. I did not make the CA connection as it took a few days to get rolling and CA had never bothered me before. Multiple visits to the doc, diagnosis of sinus infection, asthma (sp?), flu, cold, allergies to substance unknown etc etc. Half a ton of pills, inhalers, cough mixtures, sinus rinses etc later there was no significant improvement. I ended up using a salt/bicarbonate mixture squirted up my nose with a Water-pic(!). ENT specialists final recommendation. This eventually got stuff to simmer down/break loose. It took me three months to clear that mess. Since then a whiff of CA sets my nose going and that's when I figured out that the prolonged CA session on the Predator wing was the original culprit. Don't use CA indoors now unless I have a big fan going! That stuff is nasty!!

John, I've been meaning to try the odorless. I had refrained because of the cost, and also because I just hadn't been that bothered by CA until now, but on my next trip to the big city I am going to pick some up. Been putting off the trip for a year now though, and I still have 5 gallons of fuel, 4 unbuilt kits, a dozen rolls of monokote and a few big boxes of balsa left...

I use the alcohol method. Not sure if it works, but I've had no problems at all. I make sure I keep a cold beer on the workbench. It needs to be COLD, so you may have to get a new one out of the fridge every once in a while. My theory is that the beer evaporates into the air and takes the CA fumes with it. Might not work for all, but certainly worth a try.

Thanks for the tip Jason, do you think bourbon on ice would work?

Well, Now-a-days I live up in "the big city" and if ya just need some small stuff like that, I can grab it for ya, and drop it in the mail for ya.... It'd probably be cheaper than gas for the drive up.... Just a thought.... Good on ya Junior

I wish....
I really haven't flown in about 2 yrs.... I just finished moving into a new home. After finishing some "honey do's" for me better half, I've now installed a new work bench in the garage. Now I can finally finish my 4*40 and relearn how to fly with it....
hmmmm.... Just noticed that we share the same b-day... except you got 10 yrs on me... hehe Happy Bday!!!
If ya ever need anything, you can get my email from my profile....
Good on ya
