I read something about how the rate increase was true was true, but the number was something like an increase from 9 offenses to 46.
Still looking at the stats a conclusion could be drawn that gun control at best has no huge effect on crime overall.

Personally, if TPTB can guarantee to me that ALL firearms and/or other deadly weapons have been (not will or might) be removed from the face of this earth, I'll gladly surrender everything I own that could be used as a weapon.
Somehow, however, I don't think that will happen, and I evidently value my life and those of my family much more than most liberals. I also prefer to keep those material items for which we have worked so hard.
The police are not required to protect us, so I will take it upon myself to do so. JohnC

The Canadian government sure screwed up with the gun registratiuon. It was simply a feel good give me your votes thing, and more importantly your money to register. Alberta premier has told the authorities and courts not to charge anybody found in violation of this law, as well as a couple others too. It went way over budget, and has solved nothing at all, except to piss off legitimate gun owners. I lost my wallet when I was in college (about the time they started redoing registries etc) I got my original FAC (gun permit) when I was 16 for $5. I called the local police dpartment to let them know that I lost it and wanted a replacement. I was told they couldn't replace it, and I'd have to take gun safety course and hunting course (again) and of course they are government run and the price is now triple the original, as well as pay the new $50 fee. (it's been some time so these numbers may not be accurate) I responded that I already had the permit and need it replaced, and they say yeah we know, we have all the info right here.......so WTF???!!! I just said yeah, don't worry about it, I'll just poach with the indians. Ended up that I just gave my guns to my father before the registration came into effect and he registered them. As for the guns coming in from the states, it's not made up, I've seen a few.
My father just recently retired and is doing quite a bit of hunting and wants me to join him so I'm going to have to go all through this BS again

Patch; I feel for you. But you sportsmen had plenty of opportunity to make yourselves heard. Hell, we here in the states even boycotted going to Canada for hunting excursions due to this issue. I have not been to Pelee Island since thay passed it. It is time for you guys to get organized and rise up against this liberal socialist agenda before it destroys your freedoms and further destroys your rights.

I wish it was that easy. The problem is that there isn't really a strong party right now, and the politicians don't want to risk making any moves. I'm sure once the numbers play out before the next election to show it's still losing money and not saving any lives that it will be dropped.
I think maybe the government wants to raise beer tax again and they're afraid the public will own more fire power than our military and overthrow them

I enjoy shooting when I get the chance. My only issue with free posession of guns is letting certain types of "Cowboys" have them. There are certain types of people who shouldn't be allowed near a gun. We had an incident in my home town. A person and his son came home to find two teens just entering his house. The two took off running. In the meantime, the owner went into his house, went to his upstairs bedroom, got his loaded 38, and ran out into the street. He fired several shots at a car coming out of a park across the street, putting two holes in the driver side door that luckily did not go all the way trough, and also put a hole in a wood sided house nearbye. While he was doing this, police were arresting the teens several bloocks away, on a different street. This type of person should not be allowed to ever have a gun again. The people who taught me to shoot had a very good attitude towards guns. Any gun in the house was locked in a safe in the attic. Ammunition was locked in another room. Every gun had a trigger lock. When the father or one of my friend's brothers took somebody shooting, some basic rules were passed out. The guns were always locked in a car trunk, the guns were always checked for empty clips, chambers or actions, clips were NEVER in a gun until ready to fire, and if anyone carelessly let a muzzle swing toward anybody else, the party was over. One of my friend's older brothers took a couple bullets in Korea, and he told you flat out, ANY carelessness with a gun would get you introduced to the stock of his rifle. This family had rfles from 30-06 to 22s, and pistols from 45 ACP to 22 short. I was taught to respect firearms. My dad agreed with this family. Untill he died last year, he agreed that while we shouldn't, and can't eliminate guns, we must keep them out of the hands of the irresponsible. Bye the way, the person in the SELF DEFENSE example got out of prison a little over a year or two ago. He's trying to get back his 'Constitutional Right'.

A couple points about that example of abuse of firearm ownership.
The guy was so far beyond self defense, the gun possesion was a secondary issue.
Well it keeps them from some accident and/or negligence incidents, at least until they are taken out and used, and then they still have the same potential as any other gun, and if they are in the attic what good are they when someone is in your bedroom?
I have no problem with keeping guns away from the irresponsible, I do have a problem with everyone being presupposed to be at best irresponsible and at worst criminal.

There is no question that running out in the street and shooting the first thing you see after your house is invaded is totaly wrong. I would say that guy had serious issues in the phsycotic department. One thing though that does really scare me is this. I have talked to my neighbor who is a state trooper. He reminds me that if someone comes into your house uninvited to rob you or do otherwise criminal acts, before you shoot him you darn well need to be able to prove that you were in harms way. And just because he is taking your stuff, might not prove that, in a court of law. In other words the criminal needs to be armed with a gun himself, or a huge knife, or if he is six foot eight and weighs 290 lbs, and is carrying a baseball bat. According to the trooper, if a small build individual breaks into your house at two in the morning and you blow him away, and it is found he has no weapons on him, you could end up in prison. Kinda sucks don't it? I just hope I can get out of this city before I am confronted with that sh!*.
