"So what?" you say? Well, it was the first time in 4 years, that's what. I'm back baby! Now, I did fly a Soarstar about a month ago just to see if I could still do it but today was the first time in 4 years that I flew a nitro powered 40 sized model. Felt good.

Cool.
I think the hobby is like malaria. It never really goes away, sometimes it comes back with just a mild case and just makes you go out and buy a copy of Flying Models. Other times, it relapses with a vengeance and you find that in a period of a couple of months you've built a dozen airplanes.
Me, I'm having a middle strength relapse. I cycled every battery pack in the place and only found one that was dodgy. I spent a chunk of the day fitting a new motor and new receiver in one of the planes and discovered that my "good" radio, the expensive computerized one, which is only five years old, is on the fritz with a broken gimbal. I switched all the planes over to my "beater" radio, which is nearly old enough to vote.
I haven't flown since December, but I now have two planes flyable again so we are going to try to get out tomorrow and give it a go. We'd go try right now but the wind is honking and it looks like a thunderstorm is brewing up. I hate having the planes all repaired, charged, prepped and ready to go and then having the weather shut me down. In the old days I'd have gone out and battled the wind, but I guess I'm more of a grown up now.

Well, I guess I'm turning just the opposite. The wind was really blowing yesteday when I flew and I never hesitated to take it up. The plane was all over the place and I'm not sure what of it was wind (it was strong), what was nerves and what part was just an out of whack plane...but I took it up three times in about 45 minutes that I was there. Back when I was flying before, I had this kind of..."That was a good flight and I landed in one piece...I'd better go home on a positve note" attitude. Yesterday, I kept adjusting things and going up again. Until I determined that the plane needed some things that I couldn't address at the site. I'll try it again one day this week and maybe one of my nicer planes. The one I was flying was a pvc pipe and coroplast funfly type that I bought for my son 5 or 6 years ago.

Well Greg, I figured if you could brave the wind, I could. Went out tonight and had three great take offs...unfortunately, only 2 great landings. Smashed everything forward of the wing on my newly refurbished Cutie. It's repairable, but I simply have no place to work on it. Not even sure I could come up with room to assemble an ARF right now. Anyway, I've made my offering to the balsa gods.

Well...sorry to hear that but like you say...the balsa gods WILL have their way. I did mention that the plane I was flying was coroplast and PVC didn't I? That had a lot to do with my confidence level....

These days I am mostly flying control line Old Time Stunt. I've been flying a 1949 Dmeco Sportwing with a ST G20-15 diesel. Put in a successful visit to the Vintage Stunt Contest in Tucson in March ( i.e. flew the required two recognizable 1951-52 stunt patterns, and had a lot of fun). Successful contest in Seguin later in March (same criteria). Been out with minor health problems. Was out flying last Sunday. All went well until the overhead 8's when the engine started overheating and slowing down. made it through the 8's, and flew the square loop to finish the pattern, even so. When the airplane landed we found a butterfly plastered over the front of the cylinder. Oh well! Next contest is in Dallas in two weeks.

Wow..Made it past the prop only to be fried on the cylinder. Some days it just don't pay to come out of the the daisyfield.

We took the old Kadet out on Sunday. Had three or four nice flights. Wind came up a bit on the last go and I ran it into the mesquite. Shattered a prop and ended up with the tires all full of thorns, but no other damage, so I call that successful flying.
Thinking of getting rid of everything though and buying a sailboat. Maybe I'll haul it all up to the next Jefco auction.
