-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I need you guys to talk me out of buying a Parkzone Spitfire or P-51...Can I get a little help?
One more favor...Does anyone have the April 2005 issue of Model Aviation lying around somewhere? I'll buy it or trade you some other old magazine for it. I'm trying to learn about electric flight and it contains part two of an article by Bob Aberle that was aimed at beginners.

Now there's a name I haven't seen around here in a long time.
I have the issue of Model Aviation you are looking for in my technical library. Sorry, it's not for sale. However, if you email me your mailing address, I will photocopy the article you are referring to and send it to you. It is only three pages long.
My email is:
cleobruno @ yahoo dot com (remove the spaces)
I also have the last 30 years or so of Model Aviation, Model Airplane News, R/C Report and Radio Control Modeler (now defunct) if you are looking for any other articles.
Bob

Yeah, it's been a while huh? Funny how this hobby takes hold of one and doesn't let go. The urge to pursue it is kind of like a staph infection. Keeps popping back up. Anyway, I'm looking at going electric because I think it'll allow me to get back into the hobby and avoid some of the obstacles that drove me away from it for over 3 years. I appreciate the offer to photocopy the article. That will be fine for my purposes. I'm dropping you an email.

Hey Greg, There are a lot of people buying the park zone models and I suppose they are OK, but they still smack of "toys" to me. I'm not sure that the support gear you need for them is consistent with the gear you need to support larger more complex and challenging electrics.
I think the best way to get going in electrics right now is to order a set up from Hobby Lobby. They have a deal on their 6ft electric Telemaster that includes plane, radio, batteries, motor, speed controller, charger, etc, all matched and set up for you. Gets you into the air quickly with a good performing airplane that is also good for tuning up those "haven't been flying for a while" reflexes.
Whatever you do, be sure that your outfit includes a charger that is designed to handle Lithium Polymer ("LiPo") batteries. LiPo's are the way to go and not all chargers can handle them.
To fly electrics the way you fly glow (i.e. non stop except for fueling, you need to have at least two chargers and four battery packs so that you can have one pack cooling off, one pack in the active airplane, and two packs on charge.
It is really nice to land the airplane and not have a layer of greasy dirt to clear off the plane. I give my electric planes a good coat of turtle wax and wipe it down with a dust cloth every now and again. I can let the models into the living room without worrying about them dripping on the carpet.
I have a smaller electric, an SR Cutie, that I fly up at the local soccer field. It's great fun. I rarely disassemble the model and I can it in the back of the truck, the kids in the front, and run up to the park after work for a few flights before dinner, and be back in under 20 minutes.
Even though the regular flying field is only 3 miles from the house, getting out there and back and getting the big glow models put together, fueled, flown a few times, cleaned up, disassembled, and back to the house still takes the lion's share of an hour.
I'll continue to fly glow until I wear out my current stock of engines, but when they do wear out, I expect I'll be moving to 100% electrics eventually.

Heh heh, yeah Greg, I know well what you feel...I have all my RC gear and planes stowed in the garage, next to a half dozen unbuilt kits, gawd knows how many gliders and a CL model that's had a total of two flights in it's long life...
I look up and pine for it every time I go in the garage...No urge to fly electric yet, though Jaime won't leave me alone about it every time he calls. I do miss the smell of nitro-meth and castor, not to mention the rush of panic/thrill/impending doom...
I do have a Laser Models mini Lazer 3D electric kit that I'd gladly trade straight up for an electric Telemaster or comparable flight characteristic'd plane...
It's all a time-and-money issue for me anymore.

Sorry I didn't get back to you guys. I didn't realize there had been any response. Well, to update y'all, I fell prey to temptation and bit on a pretty good deal for a Parkzone Mustang NIB for $115. I've heard/read mixed reviews on these but I must admit, I like the relatively scale looks of it and it includes everything needed to just fire it up and fly. Frankly, I've always been a scale guy so it's always going to be something like a warbird or a Stearman or a Pitts, etc.. Depending on how I like this, I may move up to a more quality oriented twin next. I've always avoided twins because of the engine out issues so it's a natural thought for me when going electric. I'll keep you updated from time to time. How about a Soarstar for the Laser Eric? ...Oh....I didn't think so.

How about a Soarstar for the Laser Eric? ...Oh....I didn't think so. Don't know the Soarstar, Greg...Is it a gentler, kinder flyer? It's been a Long, long time, and if I were to go electric, it would have to be something trainer-ish... I'm actually thinking of assembling a SPAD to crash first...I have a lot of unused engines, a Fox .25bb not the least of them. I also have three gallons of Morgan Fuels 10% that I've carried around with me for the last 5 or 6 years...It would be crazy for me not to use that up first. Eric

That old fuel is probably spoiled, you'd better send it to me for proper disposal...

Eric, the Soarstar is one of those planes that a person who's never flown a plane could handle once you got it to altitude for them. I was just joking with you about trading. Great for kids though. I got it for my son years ago. Still kinda fun sometimes for relaxation flying. There's another identical plane that goes by a different name..Wingo. You know that one? They are basically made up of a pod to hold the battery and electrics with a rod sticking out of the back....Oh, what the heck....

I don't remember how much I paid for these, but it was part of a bulk buy that the club I was with in Scottsdale invested in, so I bet I got a good deal... OK Greg, you're right, you don't wanna trade...The plane looks cool, but I'm just not into the baby nursery color scheme... Eric
