I am having a fit keeping my Brodak 40 running. It sounds great on the ground, but doesn't want to stay running in the air. It doesn't have much time on it, but it wasn't that tight from the start. Tried all the usual stuff. Somehow I don't trust that twin hole spraybar. It is a very early engine.

Remember that when you look down into the venturi you should not see any of the two holes. It is like the old Fox 35 Stunt needle valve assembly as far as the spray bar. Could be bad plug also. DOC Holliday

I have a brodak 25 and one hole faces out, the other in and it runs great. I tried doing it the fox method and it would not even start. Does this make sense?

It might work, but I don't recommend flying it that way. Sooner or later it will cause a problem. I plan to try a ST or PA NVA in the Brodak 40.

I am not going to argue with you, but, I would say the engine was not running right. If you pull the spray bar out you will see the two holes are a little off center. When installed correctly you will not see either hole. Later, DOC Holliday

First time I flew my Fox 35 in the Demon, It ran fine. Single hole ST spraybar. While cleaning the airplane I saw that the hole in the spraybar was straight up looking at me. Turned it like it is supposed to be and could tell no difference. Of course the Fox 35 is an old, clunky out of date engine, not a modern hitech Stunt Supremo. ;D

It is a very early engine. You may want to send your engine to Tom Hampshire. He's the designer of the engine and knows more about early B40 and B40's in general than anyone. Tom also happens to be one of the nicest individuals around. One of our club members had an early B40 that gave him fits. First it wouldn't run, then it would run too lean. Basically, a nightmare of an engine. While at a contest, ÷e mentioned that to Tom Hampshire. Tom took the engine and did some work to it. Now it works just fine. It still does not have the power of the later b40's though.

I went ahead and installed a Super Tigre NVA in the Brodak 40 and installed the engine in my Galaxy. Lets see what happens now.

Flew the Galaxy with the Brodak 40 today. The engine ran fine until I clipped the ground with it. I forgot to allow for the extra weight of the muffler on the Brodak. No damage, not even the prop. Need to rebalance the Galaxy and try it again.

Glad to hear your getting some results with the Brodak 40. It makes me think of running an old Fox 35 Stunt. It takes tender care and a lot of break in. DOC Holliday

I pulled the muffler from the Brodak and flew it. It ran cold and quit inverted. This time I put in an OS 4 stroke plug that should keep it running. We'll see.

Might try a little more nitro, but, I would suggest getting a tongue muffler for it. I know Brodak wants a lot for them, but, they work great and only weigh about a third of stock muffler, if that much. By the way would you like some of our sub freezing temps sent your way? DOC Holliday

By the way would you like some of our sub freezing temps sent your way? DOC Holliday Don't do me any favors like that. If it gets down into the 50's, I consider staying home instead of flying.

I flew the Brodak again today. This time, it stood running. I got one slightly lean run. Now it is losing compression. I thought ABC engines were resistant to damage from slightly lean runs. I'm going to have to send John Brodak a letter telling him what I think of his engine.

Contacted Tom Hampshire. He said to send it back. I pulled it off the Galaxy and boxed it to send in. Hope he can do something with it.

Hope Tom can figure out your engine problem. My B-40 has been running like a champ and it has had three different brands of fuel thru it. Seems the SIG 10% 22 oil is the best so far. Also have went to SIG #3 glo plug. Later, DOC Holliday

This is the message from Tom Hampshire: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ G'day, Phil - All fixed. Will ship this PM. Problem was varnish, hot tanked in anti freeze and scrubbed with a toothbrush. Piston cyl fit and rod good. Sleeve bound slightly in case, lapped and reassembled. Case bore for rear cover a little out of round, sanded by hand to slide fit, mating surfaces left alone. Added one extra head gasket for .010 total. Plug OK, guess its an OS 4 stroke, RPM dropped slightly when lighter pulled on test. Suggest Thunderbolt RC long or Glo Devil 300. If you have run all castor fuel, suggest an oil blend of 50 - 50 Klotz synthetic and castor, 20 - 22% total oil. Gives the superior film stength of castor without the varnish formation. Excellent welding on the block and muffler, wish mine looked like that! Tom Hampshire ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I did run it on straight castor from new. It didn't have much time on it. Certainly not enough for much varnish buildup. I'll run it on my 10/10/10 nitro/castor/klotz mix and see what happens.
