If the bind is still there after the bench run, i'll send it back to Tom Hampshire. Most likely it will need a case. This is simply not worth it.

The bind is still there. I have a message in to Tom Hampshire. We'll see what happens now. Most likely I should have used a strap on muffler during the effort to work this thing out. It would have saved a lot of grief.

Tom has the engine. He has declared the case a total loss. I give up. This thing has been trouble from the beginning. I have told Tom to send it back to Brodak to do with it what they will.

Tom went ahead and sent the carcass back to me anyway. I'll have a close look at it later. I'll probably bench run it for a while to annoy my Peruvian neighbors, at least until it melts down.

I have it on the test stand right now doing several runs to try to burn it in. It doesn't seem to want to overheat. Time will tell.

The harder I ran it, the better the compression got. I put it back into the Galaxy to see what it will do. I should know better. We'll see.

This is a painful thread to read. Sorry for all of the trouble it shouldn't be that way. My B40 was balky when I first ran it but most of my problems where with my tank setup and I would flood the engine trying to start it. I went to a plastic clunk tank and it was a different engine. I plumbed the tank for uniflow using no muffler pressure. What I wanted to say was you can get a new 46LA from tower. They bolt into the B40 holes but the thrust washer sticks out 1/4 longer. It is cheap and a very easy engine to set up and usually runs right out of the box. You mayl want to get a smaller tongue muffler for it as the stock one is typical OS large and it could make the Pathfinder nose heavy. Many new OS 40LA or 46 LA's can be had cheaply (~$50) off of the Bay or R/C Universe. Both work great. Buy NIB. Hang in there hopefully you can get through this rough start .

I have 2 LA 40, 1 LA 46, 3 FP 35 etc. At last inventory, I had 53 engines not counting .049's. I have more now. I have no shortage of engines, I just wanted to have a Brodak 40. Big mistake.

I tried to fly this thing once more. It started out rich for about 10 laps and went dead lean and stood there. This using the chicken hopper tank. The engine has been removed, needle valve and plug removed, put back in its box, and placed in the back of the engine drawer. As far as I am concerned, that is the end of that. I don't have time to fight with this thing. I have too many good engines.

Since I really hate to give up on anything, I drug the Brodak 40 out from the back of the drawer and mounted it on the Bassmaster. I took it out today and tried to fly it. The first flight was with a 10-4 Taipan prop and 5/15/5 nitro/castor/synthetic fuel. Not enough prop. I then mounted a Mejzlik 10.6-5 prop. Too much load, but a dead steady run. Third flight was with a BY&O 10-6. That was about right. This thing is finally starting to run like it is supposed to. We'll see how it runs next week.

Garf, I am still using 11-4 props on my Brodak 40 which is going into the Arctic Fox. I tried one of the new 10.5 X 4.5 Thunder Tiger props and it was too much blade area. DOC Holliday

I have aquired a new case for this thing. I have no idea if this is going to make any difference, but we'll see. There are several small differences between the new and old case. If I can graft some pictures together for a old/new view, I will post them. It seems that the new cases have no bushing at all and the oil groove is in a different place and goes out all the way to the front and out.

The engine is back together with the new case. I will bench run it as soon as I can.

I would try it again on the bench, not in flight! If the engine is running ok, you have a tank problem, not an engine one...other think that it could be wrong on your engine is the backplate gasket...try to replace it with a new one. Just my 50 cents.

I have been through far too much with this thing to believe that this is a tank problem. It has been on several different airplanes with a lot of different tanks. This engine would simply not hold a setting. I hope the case will help or it will go back in its box and in the back of the drawer permenantly!

If you are any good with Fox 40's I will trae with you but, I think you would get the short end of the straw. Have fun, DOC Holliday
