 Fronkensteen 3
« Thread Started on May 7, 2010, 8:50pm »

The airplane to be known as Fronkensteen 3 is taking shape. The wing will be the wing from Fronkensteen 2 that recently met its end in a full power inverted pancake crash. The damaged planking has been replaced and reinforced and the gear is scheduled to be replaced. The new fuselage will be the third of a series I put together recently. This one uses 1/64" plywood for the rear fuselage skin.

Be sure to glue it with "Bruker", as in "Frau Bruker"

For those that don't understand, watch Mel Brooks "Young Frankenstein"

Brooks claims that "Bruker" is German for "Horse Glue". That has been disputed, but what the heck! We will always have "What big knockers" and "Want to roll in the hay" to ponder when things go awry.

I'm still waiting for Young Frankenstein 2 and History of the world 2. But then, I'm still waiting for Caveman 2.

The wing is installed in the fuselage. I have made up a block resembling a cheek cowl for the inboard side of the front of the wing to fuselage joint. It's loads of fun fitting it to the wing.

That's the first line I thought of when I saw the name. ;D ::)

Garf, Let us know how it works.

It's in final assembly. The landing gear has been lengthened and bent forward. The rudder is part of one from an R/C wreck. Won't be long now. This time it will get an LA 46. [image]

A plywood simulated canopy will be a good idea?

If you are having fun, who cares what it looks like. I remember a young man in the club years ago about my age that no one would help because of how his planes looked. Had an old O&R engine that he could start. It had enough power to take off and fly level for a few laps. Then it would lose power and land. It would not slow down enough to stop but, after a lap or two it was airborne again. They said he was retarded but, I didn't think so as he was always friendly to me. He would take peoples wrecked planes and put them back together. I just wish I could remember his name as Charley of Charley's Hobby Shop said a big limo pulled up in front of the shop, a no parking zone. A guy got out in a business suit and came in. Seems it was the young supposedly retarded lad. Said he started high school and everything just started coming together. Went to collage on full scholarships and had his own business. You just never know.

No, it is no true!!!! This is the spirit, to build from scrach or from old models....not necessary to have an Yatchencko to be in the top!!! Keep going Phill! Not every time we have to develope rocket science in order to fly control line!!!

The first base coat just went on this thing. If I could figure out how to make paint stick to monokote, this thing might turn out to be fairly good looking.

UPDATE: Second base coat is now drying. We'll see how much work I feel like putting into this thing.

I think I have a major problem. When I bought the paint for Fronkensteen, I must not have been paying attention. The Rustoleum I bought turned out to be water based latex paint. This stuff can't be fuel resistant. Would it work if I put a coat of clear regular polyurethane over it?

I finally put another coat of color on this thing. I hope it doesn't end weighing a ton by the time I am done.

I have a coat of clear polyurethane applied and have the rudder covered with Brodak film. The color of the rudder, the latex paint, and the dope on the horizontal stab are almost identical. Must be a sign. The LA 46 is mounted. Next will be the tank retaining wires. I wonder where the CG will come out? Control rod from the 2 has been adapted to the 3.

Yup. It ought to.

You do have a postal scale, right?

Incidentally, not only do I have a TF kit version of a Streak in process, there is a Brodak Lightning Streak wing going into a salvaged TF kit fuselage in a second project!

I inherited something a friend put together called a TomStreak. It is a Veco Tomtom wing in a Flitestreak fuselage. It flies.

Kiwi

How is the L/E made on the Lightning Streak? I'm sure it's not made like Top Flite made theirs.

FINALLY! Fronkensteen 3 is done! With any luck at all, it will get its first test flight tomorrow. For once, I have a good feeling about this. That scares me.
